What does a medcomms consultant do?
Guess what? Today is #MedCommsDay
That's right, everyone in MedComms gets their own special day to celebrate.
If you had said to me a decade again that I would be tits-deep in #MedicalCommunications as a career I would have laughed, but here we are now.
Yet, just like regular copywriting, a lot of people don't really know exactly what medcomms is or what's involved. So let me use this time to enlighten you.
ChatGPT says that medcomms refers to creating and distributing medical and scientific information for various audiences. And this can include activities like writing articles, creating presentations, developing educational materials and more, all within the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. Some of the specific comms I've worked on include:
- An immunology slide deck to help patients understand their condition and treatment
- A new website and fundraising pack for The Follicular Lymphoma Foundation
- Case studies for Changing Places facilities
- Whitepaper and thought leadership on the role of epigenetics
- Social media campaigns for global awareness campaigns
- Packaging for medicines
- Scripts for video guides showing how to use self-injecting medicines
And as much as it pains me to say it, AI is right. But it's also so much more. Because before I even get to the stage of designing and creating the material there's plenty to keep me busy.
I also work closely with my clients on a consultancy basis, looking at everything from patient journeys in e-commerce sites like online pharmacies, and patient experience in educational content, to overall content strategy. I look at HOW healthcare brands talk to their customers, whether they are other businesses or patients. I develop tone of voice, pull together social media calendars and do industry analysis to help my clients be both proactive and reactive in their marketing endeavours.
And even 10 years in, I still get a buzz from every single project I work on.
I've got some upcoming space in my diary for a new retainer or project from August 2025 onwards, so if you'd like to work with me, don't hesitate to drop me a message.
Happy MedComms Day to everyone who celebrates!

P.S - the picture isn't me. The heatwave and menopause effects I'm currently experiencing mean it would be a picture of a puddle instead!
